Voice Lesson 3: Imagery

Creating an effective setting is imperative to your story. Look at the example below and see how the author relies on what she hears to describe this particular scene:

She looked into the distance, and the old terror flamed up for an instant, then sank again. Edna heard her father's voice and her sister Margaret's. She heard the barking of an old dog that was chained to the sycamore tree. The spurs of the cavalry officer clanged as he walked across the porch. There was the hum of the bees, and the musky odor of pinks filled the air.

-Kate Chopin, The Awakening

Write a paragraph (4-5 sentences) in which you create a scene through auditory imagery. The purpose of your paragraph is to create a calm, peaceful mood. Use one olfactory image to enhance the mood created by auditory imagery. Also, incorporate the sense of touch in the paragraph. This can be a possible setting in your short story.

  1. The sounds of the chainsaws buzzed in the neighborhood. A few birds broke the silence with distant chirps and calls. Maybe, Bill thought, they lost someone too. Bill continued to pound the nails in to wood. One piece at a time. Sweat was pooling on his forehand as the sound of children playing in the street filled the barren wasteland. Bill turned in time to see one of the kids (was that Sam Rayburns's boy?) climb onto the body of the oak that layed sprawled on the street. The branches cracked as boy pulled and stretched the branches. Billy could not tell what the Rayburn was lookimg for. He could only hear the muffled voices coming from up the street.

  2. As we entered the damp grassy field the stadium roared. The fans exploded as we broke through the banner. Energy shot through my veins. As the team stretched I shuffled around the circle smacking everyones back. The warm September wind flushed over my face. I closed my eyes to take it all in. It was time to play.

  3. The wind blew our hair all around our faces. The music was blaring Love Story by Taylor Swift. Passing cars beeped and stared as we were singing and laughing and carrying on. With just one window cracked it sounded like an airplane or a loud screeching wreck. So everybodys windows were down at least 5 inches, so the rest of the neighborhood could sing along.

  4. People mingled in the blistering sun. Crashing waves provided the misty breeze over their body. Seagulls tiptoed and chirped across the sandy premises.A plane motors by in the bright sky as children run wild laughing and building magestic castles.

  5. A faint wind blew across the forest, gently swaying the willow branches back and forth. Lucas sat in a tree, chewinhg on a peach he had found some distance away, the sweet juice streaming down around his chin and fingers, finally creating a pool at his elbow and dripping off. Birds could be heard in the trees surrounding him, the rather annoyinh high pitched chirps didnt let up any. Down below, the grass danced as the wind once again made itself known, this time carrying the peach scent to unknown locations. Juice droplets dripped from the branch to the ground, and it greedily drank without hesitation, the summer would be a harsh one....

  6. He sat against the pine tree listening as the deer crunch the fallen leaves on the ground as they gracefully walk through the forest. trying to be quit as he shuffles to bring his gun up. The sound of the muffled gunshot from miles away doesnt even startle the deer. trying not to jump the deer with the pounding of his racing heartbeat. the deer stops, then the blast of the shot from the rifle right next to his ear drops the deer.

  8. The sound of tree branches clashing above as the wind flows threw them. You hear a snake like hissing sound as the 2008 jeep cherokie tires glides over the slick roads. A high pitched squeeking sound as the wippers glide across the winsheild.

  9. The field grass russled in the wind. Big wheels squealing, while the wagons banged and wobbled, and the sounds of horse hooves were thumping the earth with power. the family dog white w black blotches on him barked when he heard a band of more fast beating horse hooves came toward the wagon. The wheels squealed faster, the dogs bark turned to a growl, and the slightscream of a young girl periced the warm, moist air. The wagon banged and scraped the dirt, with all the belongings and family clanged together.

  10. The smell of fresh cut watermelon, the sound of laughter and happiness, and the taste of delicious hot dogs. Children running around, swinging, and hitting baseballs. Faces that you see once a year ( Is that uncle Pete ? ). The stories you hear and memories being shared. Why does this only happen once a year? Everyone is so happy to be together.

  11. There is nothing more annoying as the clicking of pencils. On top of that the air conditioners will never stop humming. Tension fills the room before the bell rings as everyone quickly puts their books away. The bell screams a high pitched ring and everyone scatters.

  12. As I slowly get my quad out of my garage to go riding, a cool breeze filled with pellet stove smoke, and exhaust whistles by my head. Get all geared up and I get on my quad, hoping it will start. I push the starter to the sound of a shotgun sounding backfire. My dog was going nuts and jumping up onto the garage door. I got gong to the sound of 104 dbs. Of sweet deep exhaust power. now is my time to ride. nothing matters, and nothing can stand in my way.

  13. The smell of hot dogs, popcorn, and sweet cotton candy filled the noses of every single person that walked through the small, wooden fence. Audrie walked hand in hand with her boyfriend Coty and their friends, laughing vivaciously, as if they've never felt so alive. They heard the constant screaming of little kids as they laughed running back in line for the ferris wheel. Every where Audrie looked she saw enormous clowns on stilts handning out the sticky cotton candy or the flexible women giving away popcorn while upside down. When they walked on the pier where the games were, they heard the teenaged boys whooping with delight after winning their girls' giant pink teddy bears.

  14. The dusk of a new day. The sound of the lone owl's last hoot, the blue jays, robins, chirp quietly then a million birds joined in until a chorus of chirping raised with the sun. The grumpy children complain and crawl out of bed for another school day. The buses whizz and cough by to begin an adventure of another day. Bells, whistles, laughing, crying are all heard over the schools grounds. The new school year. Another year in classes, and homework. Pencils scatching against paper. Teachers drone on about the upcoming tests and graduation. Grades begin to pile in.

  15. Walking through a crowded and rowdy hallway, racing to get to lunch. Suddenly, I spot a single person, lurking around trying to get to her next class before she gets spotted. I decide to help them get through all of the students who urge to get to the front of the line. Finally with my generosity, I end up in the back of the line and I get freezing cold food.

  16. Engines rumble as others scream their way to the finish line. Tires squeal as smoke floats by and dissapear into the wind. Your adrenaline pumps as you pull to the starting line. You can almost hear a tick as each light turns.

  18. The smell of popcorn penetrating the air just like the scream of little children running through the forgiving crowds. A tired looking man with day old facial stubble points to me, and mumbles something about getting on the ride. Kennys strong arm points my way onto the ride. With a grin he mutters "ladies first". I carefully sit on the worn bench with its paint chipping and i realise i have never felt so peaceful. We rise above the county fair and with wind blowing through my hair he nervously leans toward me and says "you are beautiful" and nervously places a sweet kiss on my cheek.

  19. as i strolled to the stage. i heard the roar of the crowd and the stench of sweaty bodys leaping in the air. as there cheered for the hard beating of the drums the hypnotic riffs from me and my rythum guitarits. the pulsating bass line was amplifided that people could in russia could hear. the stricking growl of the lead singer put everyone in a daze. as everyone chimed in the volume level increased by 150 watts. the lights where flashing green, red, and blue. all of a sudden the lights went out. it started as a lonely wine of a whammy-bar from my signature solo that rocketed in to the arpeggioes of the rythum guitarist and the bassist. i broke off in to the dramatic riff that brigthened the whole stage as i was shredding, sliding my fingers up and down the neck of the guitar. playing so hard my fingers began to bleed. the show ended with no casuitys and the whole world was satisfied.

  20. The weather matched everyone's mood that day. She couldn't stand the stale air in the church, mixed with the stench of roses and grandma perfume, so she decided to go stand outside. The rain fell onto her face, washing away the tears running down her cheeks. In minutes, her clothing was soaked and she shivered but refused to go back inside. A rumble of thunder sounded in the distance, as if the angels were angry at what happened five days ago. The car was still there in the spot where it happened, no one wanted to move it. Maybe it would turn into a memorial of sorts, something to remember him by, to mark the place where he took his last breath. She could still hear his words in her head, the words he spoke to her before the accident. "I love you," he said, not knowing they would be the last words he would ever say.
She wondered if the rain would be able to wash her momories away, on that cold, silent, Saturday afternoon.

  21. The waves crashed on the calm beach.White sand glowed in the faint moonlight. Laughter could be heard from a young couple strooling hand in hand. The air was heavy with the sceant of salt, and the warm wind blew my hair in different directions. Lights reflected back off the water from the bright glowing city.Shadows of palm trees were cast all about. As I looked into the sky the stars smiled down giving the black sky a life of its own.

  22. The smell of exhaust and dust overflowed the stuffy air of the arena. The frozen, mucky ground was leading my way to victory. Before I even got there the urge to ride entoxicated my veins. I could already feel the vibrations of the bikes racing on by. Flying over the jumps with lightningbolt speed and hitting doubles filled my head. I was completly overwealmed with excitement and intisipation. I wanted to ride! I could sense myself up on that bike preparing for take off.

  23. Wind screams by Ryochi's ears as he plummets toward earth. The ground gains size by leaps and bounds running to meet him. Jet planes buzz between him and the earth oblivious to the fact he was tumbling toward them at back breaking speeds. As he spins head over foot time stops as he notices a small park outlined by trees making the church seem like an oasis in an urban wasteland. The stained glass window shine like a precious gem nicer than any he has ever seen. This would be one uncomfortable impact.

  25. The extended walkway that leads you to your next doom. At the end of ever class gets kids feet scuffing the floors. People screaming at other people. The walls reflecting light off of rays of sunshine. Some of the tiles in the roof torn off ruthlessly by heavy-set bearded greased up humans. Lockers are dented from the force of many fists over time. The sounds of random objects echoeing through the hallways.

Gun shots and morder rounds blasting and ringing in my ears. The door drops and bullets are wizzing over my head. Sand slowly seeping through my boots. The sergeant enforcing field plans. Only hiding behind a metal barrier and my chest is punches by a bullet. Pain erects through my whole body. I scream for mercy but nobody understands. Vision is gettin blurry and i find myself grasping and fighting for oxygen. The medic approaches and announces that im not going to make it.

  28. As we arrived at the field our team all so quiet as if we were going to get ambushed. as we started setting everything up the other team came. It was almost like a stare down. As the game started we were up to bat. The first person got up to to the plate with heavily breathing and nervousness. The first tap of the bat was a foul. The second swing...

  29. The rain tampered on the roof of the sheriff’s house. Whistling and howling that sounded like a werewolf but it was just the wind past through my window. The tumbling thunder vibrated my dark, peaceful room. Hockey announcer's chatter broke through the crack under my door. A noise I wasn't not familiar of tapped against my window. I froze in fear, was Victoria back for me? The tapping sound was heard again, i leaped to the door length windows that had drip lets of water running down the outside. To my surprise there stood a stoking wet Edward, cradling pebbles in his cold, stone hands that he was penetrating at my window.

  30. The people mourned over the cherry oak. A flag draped over the cold metal rails almost scraping the ground. The cries of the wife and her young flush the atmosphere. Synchronized shots from the men in uniform echo across the field. The frigid rain beats off the black umbrellas as the oak descends into the ground to be stitched into the families minds forever.
